You cant hire a delivery driver for 20k in the states. Hell the left is pushing for 15 dollars an hour min wage which is a little more than 30k a year.

$30k is minimum wage in Europe

LOL, bullshit

minimum wage in Croatia (which is a part of EU) is below 4800 € ($5500) per year

Really hoping someone buys New Dawn and continues development. It's a good game with endless potential

BPG was so fucking financially retarded, despite being warned multiple times

The worst part was how arrogant and out of touch they were with the community

Did you get your wires crossed? BPG still is financially viable and is constantly in communication with the community. You can get on discord and talk to neil right now if you wanted.

I think Battle Smurf forgot which forum he was on while he was badmouthing a company.

I, together with a couple of devs from Aesir tried to buy the DFUW license less than a year ago.
However, the estimated server cost was crazy. Specially the US ones.

AV didn't do the negotiation, we had  to speak with a guy from Oolasoft.
We had some really nice ideas and a bunch of great people with various talents. Even a couple of old AV devs was eager to work as consultants.
But we didn't have the balls to put our own money on this...

If ub3rgames goes for auction or whatever this is exactly on March 5th, don't expect anything of it.

No one will want to own it. It'll sit there until it goes away. This isn't a possibility that New Dawn will be revived.

Just making sure no one gets wrong expectations.

i dont see how the license will transfer to a new company.  Its just like if a subway down the street closes shop you can buy all the stuff but until you talk to subway you cant open a subway.

More details?

I'm really curious just what kind of server infrastructure is needed.  It doesn't seem like it'd be that bad given the core parts of the game were designed well over a decade ago, mostly pre-Cloud times.

Like 3-4k Euro per month for the EU server, and that amount times two for the US one. + The same amount for a billing provider.
But this is based on the figures before UW was shut-down, and there are more hosting options available today.
On top of this, we had 3 different licensing options, but even the cheapest one required a franchise fee, on top of the monthly royalties.

This was too much of a risk for our personal wallets as this would only be a "hobby" project, initially. None of us were committed to drop our current employment. We thought about a crowd funding campaign but the motivation ran out, unfortunately.
Still, I don't think a DFUW / DFO hybrid would fail as long as the team behind it have some transparency. Imagine a moderated forum, weekly vlogs from inside the office, passionate developers and a management team who know how to run a business....

If dfuw didn't feel like ice skating melee combat, I'd play it.

Also I'd prefer they introduce race wars and make mahirim look like wolves again... But can't be picky at this point.

I have little doubt New Dawn (and by extension Darkfall 1), as well as DFUW, could've all been successful games in their own right, given proper development and if run as a sustainable business. No Triple A effort was necessary and would in fact defeat the purpose. There are countless old games that still have playerbases despite being from many generations ago; I was recently playing on the Project 1999 EQ1 Emu server and the game was still as wonderful as I remembered, with 1500 concurrent at peak - for a 20 year old non-isometric game, ported BACK to its 20 year old state. Ultima Online, EQ1's competitor at the time, is also still alive and playable.

It always simply comes down to how enjoyable the game is - the rest are excuses. For players interested in sandbox, the pleasantries always come last, if ever.  All variants of Darkfall could've been great games, but in the end, there were always a host of reasons why this never came to pass, though I'll always disagree with the notion that the potential just wasn't there and it was a futile undertaking from the start.

Personally, I've always felt that with Darkfall's combat being as exceptional as it was, its conquest systems serving their purpose - the emphasis needed to be on the game's RPG sandbox, which was entirely nonexistent despite boasting one of the best handcrafted game worlds ever made, a world absolutely ripe for making it all feel interconnected and meaningful, allowing players to "live" in that world and experience its combat and conquest organically, rather than it being the only thing to do, in meaningless "rinse-repeat" fashion. To my mind, one of the biggest problems (though there were many, I grant you that) was that no Darkfall has ever truly bothered to give a shit about its "virtual world".

If the price were low enough I'd even consider bidding on the rights just for the personal enjoyment (if nothing else) of looking behind the curtain and seeing what we have to work with. There's still just nothing like it out there, which is always the final irony of this whole thing.

One of the ROA devs i think Dest said they had a 800 core vm running 13 servers and almost a tb of memory.
